Have you ever heard a popping sound in your knee? Perhaps you have even noticed that it happens more often or gets louder as you get older? Many people experience this feeling. What causes it, and is there any way to find relief? Here is what you need to know about the popping sound that some people experience in their knees.
What Is Causing the Popping Your Knee?
There are a number of factors that can cause popping in your knee. And, of course, you will need a medical professional to examine the problem in order to receive an actual diagnosis. This list of possible causes can help give you an idea of some of the conditions that have knee popping as a symptom.
- Arthritis – Arthritis is one of the leading causes of popping in the knee. This is true whether you have osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Both forms of arthritis are related to the loss of cartilage in the joints, bone spurs, or rough surfaces. When you move, your knee should be able to move freely with nothing rubbing. A person with arthritis may experience rubbing due to the reasons noted above. As a result, you may have pain and even a popping sound.
- Patellar Alignment – Patellar alignment issues occur when the kneecap (patella) is not properly aligned while the leg either bends or straightens out. This is one of the most complex hinges in the body, so even a slight alignment issue could lead to pain, popping when you move your knee, or even the feeling that the kneecap is slipping out of place. Again, this may be related to cartilage issues, as the cartilage helps to ensure that the kneecap does not make contact with your thing bone.
- Poor Glute Activation – When your glute muscles are weak, this makes all of the surrounding joints and ligaments have to work harder. One joint that may suffer in particular is the knee. So that popping sound may come from the thigh and knee having to work hard to compensate for weak glutes. If you sit a lot at work, taking the stairs instead of the elevator may be just what you need to keep your glutes strong.
