You may have noticed that your spine does not have the same undying love for the game of golf that you have. This is a common problem for regular golfers because the sport places an asymmetrical force down the back every time you swing. In other words, the fact that you are always swinging the club from the same side is creating strain on one side of your back that the other side isn’t experiencing. It could very well be this uneven stress that is resulting in chronic pain.
So what is a golf lover to do? Starting your game with a dynamic warmup may be just the solution you’ve been searching for.
Dynamic Versus Static Warmups: What’s the Difference?
A static warmup is stretching. You may lean to one side and hold it for 30 seconds and so on. However, researchers are beginning to discover that static stretching is actually better after you exercise to help the muscles cool down.
Before you exercise, you want to perform a dynamic warmup to get your body ready for action. This may involve many of the same movements you perform when stretching. However, rather than holding your position, you are constantly moving to get the muscles warmed up and ready for action. Would you like some examples?
Dynamic Stretches to Try Before Playing Golf
Dynamic stretches are basically gentle cardio exercises. Remember that goal is to – rather than simply hold a stretch – warm up with some light cardio. So, for example, when you do your single-leg stands, don’t stand on one leg for 30 seconds at a time. Go from one leg to the other leg for 30 or 60 seconds. Here are a few types of stretches to consider:
- Hip flexor multi-plane stretch
- Hamstring stretch
- Calf stretch
- Shoulder stretches
- Lumbar spine
- Activated glutes squats
- Single leg stands
There is also something to be said for gently hitting a few balls at the range to work into your swing with no pressure to hit the ball as hard as you can. Gradually increase your power as you warm up. Then you will be ready to swing with your full force off the first tee shot with a decreased risk of injury.
