Strong and flexible hips are the foundation and upright posture and proper gait. Here are some of the common conditions that we see at Ward Chiropractic and Rehabilitation and some of the treatments we use to return you to full function as rapidly as possible.

Trochanteric Bursitis

Trochanteric Bursitis occurs when the bursa, a sack that helps cushion impact and force, becomes inflamed. This can cause pain around the outside of the upper thigh near a bony prominence called the greater trochanter. It sometimes occurs when there is active movement in the inflamed region.

Trochanteric bursitis can make daily activities difficult and can be related to the alignment of the hip during movements. Treatments for this disorder consists of chiropractic adjustments to correct the alignment and break up adhesions in the bursa. Ice/heat and electric therapy may be applied to the affected region. Once the inflammation has decreased, stretches and gentle workouts that are prescribed by the doctor.

IT Band Syndrome

The IT (Iliotibial) band is a strap-like band of soft tissue located on the side of your thigh. IT band syndrome can occur simultaneously with trochanteric bursitis (see above) or it can happen as a completely separate condition. The IT band can become very tight and strained from poor hip alignment and/or physical activity. It is most common with runners and other athletes.

Treatments include stretches and exercises to help strengthen the region and also break up adhesions. Chiropractic adjustments can be beneficial if poor alignment is a factor. Ice/heat therapy helps promote healing and decrease inflammation. Doctor assisted stretching and soft tissue work using the foam roller are optimal for breaking up adhesions within the muscle band. Gluteal muscle inactivation is a common reason IT band syndrome becomes chronic and is best corrected through individually tailored rehabilitation.
